Polymer & Additives meeting October 20, 2009
Meeting location:
CSIRO: Ian Wark Room Monash Campus, Bayview Rd., Clayton
Tuesday October 20, 2009 at 5:45 PM for 6:15 PM meal.
Speaker: Mr. Michael Morrison
Mike Morrison has been working for about eight years on a novel intensive (dry) jet mill.
Most jet mills can get down to about 5 microns, & with Mike`s unique design of mill to say 1 to 5 microns
He has built increasingly large machines (75kW) & has found many novel applications.
One application is that he can get a dry powder by milling all kinds of mixed plastics together.
Co-milling of mixed plastics up to the present has been by cryogenic milling with liquid nitrogen or liquid CO2.[ paragraph]
At ambient temperatures in a conventional hammer mill it results in a melt.
Recycling of mixed plastics by the Morrison Mill is practicable & of interest to plastics industry members
Also this technology is being used in other areas such as processing brown coal.
Mike`s grinding machine has the ability to fine grind plastic and in particular low melt point plastics.
They have been able to separate plastic carpet fiber from sound proof deadening material for the automotive carpet industry.
They have also been able to:
Fine grind a number of plastic additive such as luminous powders and wood flow where they were able to reduce the moisture content of the wood flour.
Coat plastics with liquids and waxes during the grinding process.
None of these projects have been optimized to a commercial reality but they believe there may be some very viable opportunities in some of these applications.
Mike advises their focus is on grinding plastic to a fine medium and the opportunities that arise from that.
Mike will also talk about the role of their technology in other areas such as brown coal processing.
Mikes engineer will also be present to answer questions.
Michael`s factory is located at 33 Sydney Road Bayswater.
